Nitrile Glove Thickness Guide: 3.5 Mil vs. 6 Mil vs. 8 Mil

October 04, 2026

Disposable nitrile gloves are sold by thickness, measured in mils (one mil = one thousandth of an inch). Thickness is the single biggest factor in how a glove feels, how long it lasts and what it costs per case. Picking the right one keeps your team protected without overspending.

Thin gloves (3–4 mil): dexterity and value

Gloves in the 3–4 mil range offer the best touch sensitivity and the lowest cost per glove. They're a good fit for short tasks and frequent glove changes:

  • Exam rooms and patient care
  • Food handling and prep
  • Light cleaning and inspection
  • Front-desk and general-purpose use

Our Essential 3.5 mil black nitrile exam gloves are powder-free and latex-free, packed 10 boxes of 100 per case.

Mid-weight gloves (5–6 mil): the all-rounder

Stepping up to 5–6 mil adds noticeable tear and puncture resistance while keeping good dexterity. Mid-weight gloves are popular with janitorial crews, maintenance staff and anyone handling cleaning chemicals for longer stretches.

The Volt 6 mil black nitrile exam gloves are a strong choice when thin gloves are tearing too often.

Heavy-duty gloves (8 mil and up): maximum durability

At 8 mil and above, gloves are built for rough work: automotive and fleet maintenance, industrial cleaning, handling parts and degreasing. Textured grips help with wet or oily surfaces, and thicker material holds up to abrasion.

The Grizzly Grip 8 mil orange diamond-texture nitrile gloves add a raised grip pattern and beaded cuffs.

Quick comparison

  • 3–4 mil: best dexterity, lowest cost, frequent changes
  • 5–6 mil: balanced durability and feel for cleaning and maintenance
  • 8+ mil: heavy-duty tasks, chemicals, abrasion and grip

Other things to check

  • Exam-grade vs. industrial: choose exam-grade gloves for medical and patient-care settings.
  • Powder-free and latex-free: nitrile avoids latex allergy concerns, and powder-free gloves leave no residue.
  • Color: black hides stains; orange and other bright colors make tears easy to spot.
  • Sizing: stock a range of sizes — a glove that's too loose reduces grip, and one that's too tight tears faster.
